Day 14’s prompt was to write a ekphrastic poem; that is, a poem inspired by art. I chose a piece by Van Gogh entitled The Night Café (1888) as he is one of my favourite artists, and this one just suddenly inspired me after flicking through a book I have of his work. Enjoy…
The Green Fairy
In the bright lights of the night café
Lies the darkness in the heart of man.
One sits at his table, head in hands,
Dark thoughts swirling in his head
Which aches with pain and regret,
Bewitched by the green fairy’s spell.
Empty glasses still remain
From those attempting to fill
The emptiness within themselves.
No solace comes, yet here they languish
Within these walls of ruinous red
Enchanted by a spirit of green.
