Weds poetry prompt: ‘Getting Back to Myself’

reaching-out-helping-others

Today’s prompt: Take the phrase “Getting (blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem.

Getting Back to Myself

Sleep has been stolen from me
For many a tortured night,
Draining each drop of energy
In the harshness of daylight.

I stagger through the days
Longing to fly and retreat
Away from others’ judging gaze,
Hidden behind the bedsheets.

My body becomes betrayer
Wreaking woe upon my chest,
And mind marks me a failure
Depriving of peace or rest.

But within me is a faint flicker
Of who I was before the dark
For my voice has more vigour
Than the dreaded black dog’s bark.

Years of My Life: 1993

22-x-files-ranking.w529.h352

To recap: This is a series of posts that will cover each year of my life since my birth in 1987; mainly the things that interest me that happened/were released or conceived that particular year. This will include happenings in the world of music, video games, literature and television that are of particular importance or nostalgia to me. I’m hoping that this will give my followers a better idea of where my interests and passions in life lie 🙂

Weds poetry prompt: ‘Some Assembly Required’

missing-puzzle-piece-shadow-249x300

Yesterday’s prompt: Write an ‘assembly’ poem.

Some Assembly Required

All of the little pieces
That make up ourselves
Won’t always arrive
Sorted into the same box.

We were not made whole,
Nor always securely,
Fragments fly off far
Across place and time.

But many will aid us
In finding our finished model,
For they too are building
Life and sense as they go along.

It may not take the shape
We first guessed or expected,
This is the way of a creation
That continually surprises us.

Soul mates stand waiting
To slot in alongside us
Becoming the other half
That we then clutch so tightly.

Those are not the only pieces
In our pursuit of the ideal,
To craft contentment first
Is to become worthy of another.

Weds poetry prompt: ‘Nothing Important’

zip-mouth

Yesterday’s prompt: Write a ‘nothing important’ poem.

Nothing Important

It’s not important, we say
With a tortured smile
That instantly diminishes
What means the most to us.

In the path to please others
We then punish ourselves
By hiding our own desires
In the deepest darkest corners.

A days plans then hijacked
Through our damning lie
That’s tragically easier
Then letting the truth out.

If we can’t stand and shout
For passions that stir us so,
Our spines simply become
A mass of wasted bone.
