Weds poetry prompt: ‘Getting Back to Myself’

reaching-out-helping-others

Today’s prompt: Take the phrase “Getting (blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem.

Getting Back to Myself

Sleep has been stolen from me
For many a tortured night,
Draining each drop of energy
In the harshness of daylight.

I stagger through the days
Longing to fly and retreat
Away from others’ judging gaze,
Hidden behind the bedsheets.

My body becomes betrayer
Wreaking woe upon my chest,
And mind marks me a failure
Depriving of peace or rest.

But within me is a faint flicker
Of who I was before the dark
For my voice has more vigour
Than the dreaded black dog’s bark.
