After the poetry slam…

poetryslam

As I mentioned in this previous post, I performed at a poetry slam last night – my first one, so it was quite the experience! I didn’t make it past the first round, unfortunately, but still had a great time, listening to some truly talented poets. Sara Hirsch, the UK slam champion of 2014, also performed at the end, who was phenomenal – and so funny, I highly recommend checking her out. Overall it was a great night, and I’m looking forward to attending the next 🙂

This is the poem I read at the slam, for those interested – it is from my collection, The Awakening, the link to buy and download following the poem, if you like this one 😉 Enjoy!

Crystal Eyes

I looked into your eyes
And I realised
Those weren’t your real eyes,
They had crystallised
And become crystal eyes,
All because you had senselessly idolised,
Staring endlessly into your idol’s eyes.

Trapped in a dream, you were fantasising
Of something that could never come to fruition.
I don’t know why you found that surprising,
But you always did lack basic intuition.

What were you expecting from a face of stone?
To grant you absolution, the gift of freedom?
That is a quest you must embark on alone,
Without the aid of your imaginary kingdom.

Sitting on your hands, you waited and waited,
For some sign or light, disembodied voices,
To release you from the misery you created,
The pain manifested from you, your choices.

But still you waited for your precious instructor
To tell you where to go next, how best to proceed.
A deceptive disguise he may wear, the dictator,
But will gladly let you suffer and let you bleed.

It is not too late; you can still set yourself free,
Detach your mind from meaningless words,
And shatter the cursed glass, so you can see
The true, naked world, and strive onwards.
