‘To Be Honest’

honest

(A poem written from a prompt as part of last year’s April PAD Challenge from Writer’s Digest – the prompt being to write an ‘honest’ poem.)

To Be Honest

‘To be honest’ they say,
That crushing blow
Cloaked in kind words.
It collapses worlds
In one cruel breath
And pierces the heart.

By voicing that virtue,
Anything we then say
Is already validated
By a vague authority
Who coldly condones
The sting of truth.
